I was greatly interested in your e-mail about the Census for Dumfries,
John Jardine, and your comment that the 1881 Census film was incomplete.
I have also had the experience of finding ancestors on the 1891 index
but not on the 1881 index. The area I was looking for is in Enumeration
District 19 on the 1991 census and is "Part of the Parish of Dumfries
and school Board of the Parish of Dumfries" The description on the
actual Census records is very long. However the area includes the
locations of Kelton Bank, Kingholm Quay, Wellgreen. My relatives were
living at the farm of Acrehead, and had the surnames of ARMSTRONG and
EDGAR.
The Census District No 19 is not part of the 1881 Census of Dumfries
city, and so far I haven't found it as part of any other census district
on the 1881 Census Index.
Does anyone know the status of the 1881 Census records? Was this
district included in the census originally? Have the records been lost?
Is it recorded on the film of the original records which can now be
viewed at the L.D.S. Family History Libraries? Is this area (which is
the South eastern part of the parish, and East of the River Nith) the
only area missing from the 1881 Census records of Dumfriesshire?
Yours,
Helen Waug
