Hello Mary -
The ruins of Myrton Castle are located on the Monreith Estate at Port
William, off Route A714. The castle and tower was built shortly after
1504. It stands on what may be a 15th century motte. The castle was for
some years the home of the McCULLOUGHS who sold the castle to Sir WILLIAM
MAXWELL. In 1795 the MAXWELLS built MONREITH HOUSE and moved into it,
although the castle was inhabited in the 19th century. The last time I
viewed Myrton castle it was in a ruinous state, covered with vines, shrubs
and trees.
I would think your McCulloughs would somehow have a connection to those who
once owned Myrton Castle. There is also an ancient cemetery south of Port
William containing many ancient graves. Some of the inscriptions are in
Latin. Several Maxwells are buried there, and possibly McCulloughs. I hope
this is of some help in your research.

am descended from Penninghame McCULLOCHs. One of them was Thomas
McCULLOCH, but unfortunately, he is not your Thomas. He and his brother,
my ggg-grandfather, emigrated to the U.S. in 1834. Some time after Thomas
and Hugh were born, their family moved to Kirkinner -- one of the Balfern
farms, I believe. Regardless, please keep me in mind if you come upon more
information that might tie your family to mine.
