G'day ,

The list may be interested in the following extract of a comment made by the
Enumerator for Ruthwell Parish District 4 at the time of the 1841 census.

"There is a very considerable decrease in the population of this Parish.
One cause for which may be that in April 1840 families to the amount of
one hundred persons emigrated from this land to N S Wales and others to
Canada. Another cause is, puting a number of small farms into one; this
forces the families of respectable small farmers, to emigrate, or go into
towns: many of the houses of the small farmers are taken down or inhabited
by Hinds, and Ag. Lab. where the families are generally neither too numerous
nor so respectable as the families of the smaller farmers."
