There is an unresolved issue here -- some say MAY refers to the Month others
say it refers to the MAY blossom.

Incidentally, it was more than just 'undies' it was virtually all clothing.
Children were sometimes SHEWED INTAE THERE SARKS
(stitched into their shirts) in Autumn and remained thus until Spring.

I can remember an old fisherman, in my home village in NE Scotland, who
boasted to having one bath a year but only if he needed it.
