A number of years ago, about the time the OPRs were put on microfiche, I was
a member of a local group (counties to the north of London, England) that
met to discuss problems with researching Scottish family history. We often
referred to a list of all Scottish parishes together with the dates for
which the parish registers had been passed to the GRO (General Register
Office). The list would often show different dates available for births and
marriages and holes between years of availability.

I just found an abbreviated copy of this list in Appendix III of Kathleen
Cory's "Tracing Your Scottish Ancestry", published by Polygon of Edinburgh
originally in 1990. This list just shows the date of the beginning of the
first register available for each parish and also the date of the first
testament (will) inventory. These dates were also given in the "Phillimore
Atlas and Index of Parish Registers", published by Phillimore in 1995.

However, it does surprise me that lists of births and marriages that have
been misplaced and later found have never reached the GRO. I found a couple
of decades' worth for Colvend in the Kirk Session Records for the parish
which are stored in National Archives for Scotland and reported my
discovery, but that group of births has never been joined to the rest. For
the record there were births in Colvend before 1781, but don't ask me to
produce the list, I only copied down those for my own family on a day when I
had a lot of research tasks to attend to and that day was more than ten
years ago.

/cheers
Pat
