I have been collecting notes on the Newal(l) families in Dumfries
(and nearby) from the Privy Council Register, roughly between 1580
and 1680. There are also some passing references in them to other
families such as Corsan, Young and McBrair, so I thought they
might be of reasonably general interest to the list. They give at
least some impression of the independence of the people and the
burgh at that time, and can be found at:

This is also bait, as I am hoping to get some help from the list with
John Newal, a notary, born about 1592. Anyone know where, or of
whom?
