Hi Muff,
My recollection is that Leith (which is the port for Edinburgh)
has for an age been the sailing port for the Faeroes and Iceland. For one
thing, you get a more protected passage than heading out through the North
Atlantic from Glasgow, and some decent harbors to run to in a bad storm,
and for another, you have a decent freight opportunity in Aberdeen and
some plus passengers in Thorshavn. Also Leith was a developed port a long
time before Glasgow, if I remember right from the history books.
