Great Dumfries website!! http://sites.ecosse.net/middlebie/
I am very interested in your JOHNSTON index ... my Johnston(e)s were all from
Kirkpatrick-Fleming, as were my CARLYLES ... JOHNSTON from Raeburnhead and Woodhousehill,
with a connection to Bogside, and Carlyles from Turfrig, Thornwell, and Burnfoot Cottage. My
GG grandfather William CARLYLE born at Thornwell 1788-1857 was a joiner for the Maxwell
Estate at Sprinkel for 45 years. His wife was Jean JOHNSTON, born at Raeburnhead 1789-1853,
daughter of David JOHNSTON 1756 and Mary IRVING.
William CARLYLE's parents were Thomas CARLYLE born in Dalton 1759-1821 and Catherine
JOHNSTON 1766-1854 of KPF, daughter of John JOHNSTON abt.1730-1821 of KPF and Jean CRAWFORD
1734-1824 (born Fifeshire > companion to Mrs. MAXWELL at Sprinkel).
David JOHNSTON's father was William JOHNSTON of Raeburnhead, and John JOHNSTON's father
was also a William JOHNSTON, from KPF or Graitney. I don't know how or if they had a
relationship. Around 1805, David JOHNSTON or a son was at Woodhousehill, because I have a
book dated 1798 with writing "David Johnston, his book; John Johnston, Bogsid, Margret", and
on the back page "Woodhous H".
I also have a list dated c.1830 of all the farms on the Springkel Estate ... they would
make a useful addition to your website.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Linda Sherlock
