Hi Flora,
I've been curious about Coll and its history. Did MacDonalds or Clan
Donald arrive there in 400 AD. Did it get its name from Cholla? Did the
MacColl name come from there?
There is a family tradition of many clans coming from Ireland about 327 AD
with the Cholla Brothers to help the Picts fight the Romans and other tribes.
I've never seen the location that all the Scotia settled, but I have assumed
Argyll, with Skye, Colonsay and perhaps Coll seeing many of the original
settlers . I have been told that Clan McCall and perhaps MacFarlanes were
living in Ben Nevis area by 900 AD. By 1100 McCalls were in Girvan and Loch
Fyne. Hollywood has Hamish and Angus MacCaul with Wallace in 1300. Blacks
Surnames have McCalls in Dumfries by 1400s (1370 at Carnshalloch) and
Guffolkland in 1490s.
Any Help Appreciated,
Ron McCall
