Jean -

There's an Andrew PIERCY, married, in a household of 5 males
and 2 females in Butts Street, Annan, 1821. That's all the info there
is - I think that by the time the schoolmaster taking the Census got
round to them he was pushed for time and stopped getting details.

It's pretty futile looking at SMITH a couple of generations before
your man on such general terms. For what it's worth, however -

The 1801 Census shows William, Margaret, Margaret, Agnes and
Helen SMITH - two of whom were engaged in manufacturingm as
against agriculture.

The 1811 Census has William SMITH, cottager, and his spouse;
together with them are James, William, Margaret and Helen
SMITH. (manufacturing again)
Also 1811 at a different address, possibly South Brydekirk, there's
a William SMITH, his spouse, and John and William SMITH

The 1821 Census has William SMITH at the west end of Bruce
Street in the household of William Bell, saddler. There's also a
William SMITH, spouse and 2 boys, in Butts Street. Another
William SMITH and his spouse are not very far from Andrew
PIERCY. There's also a William SMITH age 50-59 at Mount Annan.

And of course heaps of other people called SMITH.
