Hi Judy
Are you still out there ?
I was down in Dumfriesshire this week on my way back from holiday.
Stayed with my sister in Thornhill, and acquired a couple of trout which I
took up to be smoked at Knockelly. Neil the smokemaster said that you'd
been in touch with him about your Hainings, and that he'd sent you some
information.
I took photos of Knockelly, Corfarding and the Laight for you, so send me
your postal address.
The present tenant of the Laight, Billy Barbour, says that your Hainings
were there from 1832 to about 1957, when the last of them, Tom Haining, had
to move out as his wife had a degenerative disease and needed to be nearer
to civilisation. (ie Thornhill)
They then had a chicken farm near Closeburn. I knew Tom well, but I never
associated him with the Laight. He was one of my late father's cronies.
Tom died a couple of years of ago.
He and his wife only had one child, a daughter called Sheila or Sheena, now
married to a man called Carlyle. She lives near Symington in Lanarkshire,
and works at Edinburgh University. I have her phone number for you and will
send it off-list if you make contact.
Cheers
Bill
