Hi Joy
My dictionary says "Gentleman —A man of gentle, or noble birth or superior
social position" even today we have 'Gentleman farmers', men who live a
leisurely life, leaving the running of the farm to their employees.

Any ideas please. My elusive GGGG grandfather ALexander Miller - presumed to
be from Dumfries area (ref White Laird Farm / Lochmaben ?) is listed as
Occupation - Gentleman on his son Geroge Miller's marriage certificate in
1854. What could this mean ?

Regards
Joy
