Thanks to everyone who replied with suggestions.
It seems my GGGG grandfather was either a 'man of means' and did not need to work for a living or that he was unemployed and didnt like to admit to it !
I suspect the former as I now have good reason to believe that at least 2 sons were separately in business in their very early 20's so they must have got some money from somewhere. They must have spent it all by the time my GGG Grandfather came along - he was a railway porter and died of drink at the age of 35 leaving a wife and 5 small boys !
(I think his father virtually disowned him !)

Any ideas please. My elusive GGGG grandfather ALexander Miller - presumed to be from Dumfries area (ref White Laird Farm / Lochmaben ?) is listed as Occupation - Gentleman on his son Geroge Miller's marriage certificate in 1854. What could this mean ?
