Hello,
The 1837 edition of Pigot's Directory has these entries for some of the
names you mention in Gatehouse of Fleet.
The introduction says, amongst other things, that the chief business of the
town is the manufacture of cotton goods....in the mills formerly built by
Messrs. Birtwhistle & Co. now repaired and worked with much spirit by
Messrs James Davidson & Co"
Another part reports that "Mr. Murray, in order to improve the navigation in
the B(shallow) bay paid £3,000 to"cut the canal in a straight line from
which the vessels trading to the port have already derived incalculable
advantage." Vessels of up to sixty tons burden use it".
Alex. Murray of Broughton Esq. lived at Cally, "the noble residence of the
proprietor", in the list of gentry, as was
Alexander Stewart J.P. at Barharrow.
James Davidson & co were cotton spinners and manufacturers.
Alexander Cowan joiner and cabinet maker had premises in Front st. as did
Andrew Payne and
Joseph Tait, painters and glaziers, (separate entries).
James Kirkpatrick was one of the 2 shipowners living in Front St.
There was also a James Kirkpatrick in Front St, linen and woolen draper and
merchant.
But this one was probably the writer of the first letter?
JAMES KIRKPATRICK, stamp-distributor and collector of taxes, Front St.
No doubt aided and abetted by
James McNish, writer, Front St.
Barbara
