I found the following entries while researching CARLYLEs:

Source: "The Original Scots Colonists of Early America,
1612-1783", Dobson, page 48:

A. Records exist before 1739 for Alexander Carlyle, merchant
planter; res. Limekilns, Lanarkshire; parents Alexander Carlyle;
voluntarily shipped to Virginia; Dobson's source: SRO RS23.13.197

B. Also before 1750 in Virginia an Adam Carlyle, merchant
planter, res. Limekilns, Lanarkshire; parents Alexander Carlyle;
settled in Virginia; Dobson's source: SRO RS23.16.31

C. Before 1748 in Dumfries, Virginia; John Carlyle, merchant;
res. Glasgow; parents Alexander Carlyle; Dobson's source: SRO
RS36.63.1

I have several questions regarding these entries. If anyone has
any clues or suggestions, I am all ears [or, more properly, all
eyes].

1. Dobson did considerable research in Britain and uses a code
to identify his sources. I know that SRO stands for Scottish
Records Office. What does the rest of the code signify? Dobson
does not elucidate. I am confused as to whether these are
emigration reports in Scotland or immigration reports from
Virginia.

2. I have several Alexander Carlyles in my database, but none of
these match. Has anyone out there any clues as to who these
folks were? It appears that they may be brothers.

3. I am confused by Limekilns being shown as in Lanarkshire.
Was this an early county in Scotland? I have not seen this
before. I thought that Limekilns was in DFS.

Any help or suggestions will be gratefully received. Thank you
in advance.
