Pigot & Slater's Directories sounds interesting. I wonder if anyone has the
time to look up Joseph Burnie, 1856 to 1907, of the firm Bell and Burnie,
for me.

Messrs Bell & Burnie set up their building company in Bootle, Liverpool,
about 1875 but "did not forget their native place. Powfoot was then a row of
whitewashed cottages along the Solway shore. They sought land on which to
build each a house, so that they and their families might be able to visit
the place in summertime. They could not obtain less than three acres,
however; and having acquired the ground they proceeded to erect four rows of
houses, about forty in all, suitable for the reception of summer visitors,
and also laid out a bowling green and a lawn tennis court, and last year a
fine hall was built for the purpose of holding concerts during the week and
religious services on Sunday. Mr Burnie had always a fondness for Powfoot,
and as a relief from the cares of his extensive business he frequently
visited the pretty little place of which he was one of the pioneers." (D&G
Standard 1907).

And who was Mr Bell ?
