Subject: [D-G LIST] Gretna christening 1803 - McCARTNEY
Date: Tue, 7 Aug 2001 21:53:02 -0400

Dear All:
I am a new member, so crave your indulgence.

My name is Terry Harry McCARTNEY, born Manchester in 1946, living in
Ancaster, Ontario, Canada. I have visited Scotland 5 times and had great
weather each time - and even the Scots I know tell me they don't believe it!
We have friends in East Haven, by Carnoustie.

My McCARTNEY search has taken me back to 1846 so far, and I am now stuck. I
have joined this list because there may be a link with Gretna, and with the
hope that I can go back further, with your help.

What I have is:

1) My ggggrandfather was a William McCARTNEY - he appears (occupation
bootmaker) on the 1846 Manchester Cathedral marriage certificate of his son
James MACARTNEY (sic), a tailor, in Manchester UK (James married Ann
WILSON).

2) In the 1851 Manchester census James McKARTNEY (sic) was b. Scotland and
wife Ann was b. Ireland. I do not know the birthplace/date of James.

3) From looking at James's age at census, his age on his death certificate
(d. 1876), and the OPRs, the only James McCARTNEY with a father William
McCARTNEY that looks likely is a James McCARTNEY, father William and mother
Mary (nee SCOTT), christened 15 April 1803 in Graitna (Gretna), Scotland
(info from christening listed in OPR).

4) Nothing in the 1841 census for Manchester helps - it does not list a
William McCARTNEY that fits, and I do not know when James McCARTNEY left
Scotland or when he arrived in Manchester.
_________________________________________________________
I am trying to track where it was in Scotland that James was born, and then
his father William, and so on and so on......

Does anyone have any information or insight re how to cement this link back
from 1846 to 1803? Would a commercial directory for Dumfries have a listing
for a bootmaker William McCARTNEY? Or a tailor named James McCARTNEY?

My father was told as a lad that his ancestors came from Aberdeen, but no
link so far.

Thanks in anticipation.

Terry H. McCartney
