Hi Terry
Welcome to the list and thank you for a very clearly explained query.

I've looked up the 1837 Pigot's Directory for Dumfriesshire but there is no
McCartney in Gretna. I couldn't find a McCartney boot/shoemaker or tailor in
the whole of the directory. The Dumfries and Galloway FHS are in the process
of producing a series of booklets of indexes of the 1841 census for Dumfries.
I don't think the Gretna one has appeared yet.

Getting proof of a link between your James and the James born 1803 will be
difficult. I don't suppose your James was kind enough to call his second
daughter Mary Scott McCartney?

Next time you come up to Carnoustie you could detour to Dumfries and look up
McCartney in the 1851 indexes at the Archives in Burns St (pre-book) If you
want to claim the 1803 James for your own then you need to make sure he
didn't die young or marry someone else and stay in Scotland. Also in the
Archives are MIs where you could see if William McCartney left a stone. You
could also try in the NAS in Edinburgh for a will of William McCartney
mentioning his son James in Manchester ......although that is a bit of a long
shot.

Irene
