The Borthwick Institute of Historical Research was founded in 1953, and ten years later became
part of the University of York. It acquired its name because it was endowed by William Borthwick
of Bridlington.
The Institute specialises in the study of ecclesiastical history, in particular that of the
Province of York. It is the diocesan record office for Yorkshire.
It has a website at www.york.ac.uk/inst/bihr/ .
