WHITE is indeed a family name that has long been associated with CLAN
GREGOR / MacGREGOR, and it is listed by the Clan Gregor Society as one of
the aliases that have been shown to have a MacGregor connection. Probably
the same with the LAMONT clan. This means that the WHITE surname has been
documented as one of the names taken by MacGregors when their own
surname/patronymic was outlawed in Scotland and anyone named MacGregor
could legally be killed on sight, their property confiscated and any
buildings burned ("letters of fire and sword"). This period of the clan
name being outlawed lasted from 1603 to 1774, though it had also happened
for a shorter time earlier.

There are members of the Society in Oz and New Zealand, several of whom I
met at a gathering in Killin, Perthshire in 1996, and there is also an
increasingly large genealogical database which you can find out about on

query being sent on to the two primary researchers, who can perhaps help
with your particular branch. One current officer is Steven White, as it
happens, and he lives in England.
