I don't know how relevant this is, but the topic reminded me of something
presented during a talk on the clearances:
Many GRAHAMs, in the Dumfries area, fell foul of the authorities and were
being persecuted. They adopted the name MAHARG, the reverse of GRAHAM, to
avoid trouble. MAHARG then became MacHARG or McHARG.
