I am searching for information about a relation, Thomas McCrone, who was
born about 1816. The story within the family was that he moved from Ayrshire
to just south of Penrith in Cumbria, with his brother Robert, when their
father died, probably about 1830. It is just possible though that they were
from Dumfries. They may also have had a brother William.

Robert McCrone (b. about 1814) lived at Great Salkeld. A William McCrone
already lived in that area around Penrith - he was born about 1757 - 1760.
My hunch is that he was Robert and Thomas's great Uncle, and that is why
they moved down to Cumbria.

Can anyone provide any further information on McCrones who moved from
Dumfrieshire down to the Lowther area south of Penrith?
