Don't want to labour this topic, but this idea of the hairdryer still
worries me.

Think about the process of paper making and the moisture content. Heat may
make the photographic paper curl and even if it returns to its previous
shape you cant be sure that the molecules that make up the image will remain
attached in the same way ie you may get crazing or cracking. The heat may
make the emulsion itself brittle. Then
there's the risk of yellowing the paper and fading the image. Damage may
not be immediately obvious.

This is from a non-technical person but from working with museums and having
a partner who is an archaeologist I have learned that the golden rule is
"you can't be too careful".

You could also ask a reputable local photographer for advice as they will
have many requests from people to copy photos from albums.
