I noted with interest an E-mail message about people doing look-ups for
others using materials compiled and published by the D & G Family History
Society.
The inference being that in doing a look-up the Society was being deprived
of sales. I will concede this may be so on some occasions but on other
occasions people may be only exploring options of last resort.
In my case someone did a look up for me in the Portpatrick 1841 census books
and on receiving the exciting pertinent information I resolved to procure my
own copies of the 1841 census. I now have 13 of the books covering the
Rhinns. I also have the MI books for Stranraer. All in all I have purchased
17 of the books available. In addition I have many other books and maps
about the area.
I anxiously await the MI books for anywhere around Stranraer including
Cairnryan, Kirkcolm, Leswalt etc.
My long winded point is there is definitely nothing like having your own
copies of available resource material provided it is going to be more than
a passing one off "perhaps" source.
Because my families were from Stranraer, Kirkcolm and Portpatrick being able
to spend time perusing my own personal copies of the 1841 Census books and
Stranraer MIs has revealed information that no amount of secondary look-ups
by another person no matter how dedicated could remotely give me.
As a person who is on multiple committees I know the vast amount of unpaid
work that goes into collating information etc. so I don't believe it should
ever be just given away but I do feel sharing some of it with "recognition
of the source" would be the way to go.
>From now on I will include in my look-ups that I do for others:

"From information published by Dumfries and Galloway Family History
Society -
9 Glasgow Street, Dumfries, Scotland DG2 9AF
Visit their Website at - http://www.dgfhs.org.uk
Other Wigtownshire information may be found in "The Wigtownshire Pages"
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~leighann/index.html "

It will be a simple copy and paste exercise of the five lines and it may
encourage more sales which may allow for funding of more published material.
If I am going to be out of order please tell me so.
Yours aye,
Sam Heron
