Subject: [D-G LIST] Dumfries local knowledge sought
Date: Fri, 13 Sep 2002 12:14:47 -0700
Dear list
Is there sks who knows the geographical layout of Dumfries (the town) in
about the 1860's?
Heres my problem....
I have an obituary from the D & G Courier from 1907 which states that my
ancestor......
"was apprenticed in Dumfries with his uncle, the late Mr. William BROWN,
whose place of business then was in the Trades Hall Buildings, the shop
now occupied by the Singer Company."
I also have a copy of Johnston's Directory (advertisements section)
showing
WM BROWN
Wholesale and Retail Draper
Manchester Warehouse
91 High Street
Dumfries
I'm trying to work out if these two William BROWNs are the same.
Does anyone know if these addresses are in fact referring to the same
place?
Hope someone can help
Kim
