hi Eunice
I searched the Times online but found no obit for the man himself. One son
(John Bennett Carruthers) died in Trinidad in 1910 and another (Samuel)
lived until 1962. this obit says William lived to be 94, which suggests he
died in 1925.
His wife died in Sep 1925 in Bacton, Norfolk and her death notice refers to
'widow of William Carruthers FRS'. She was 88 & her name was Jeannie Couch
Carruthers.
He seems to have been very active in scientific circles and to have held
strong religious convictions. An article in 1904 refers to him as a
consulting botanist to the Royal Agricultural Society, when he would have
been well past 70.
If you can get to the National Library in Edinburgh you should be able to
search the index & images for yourself - there are quite a few articles
which mention him in passing.
I feel sure there must have been some ref to his death, but just couldnt
find it. Maybe because of the OCR system.
