Adrienne Moralee Bell asked about Methodists and miners. By coincidence
I was at my local Genie Soc on Saturday and brought home a library
book.
"Durham Colliers and the West Country Methodists; The Story of the Bible
Christian Mission in County Durham 1874-1910" C.C. Short 1995. (Self
published)
ISBN 0 9524436 0 0
It contains quite a bit of history, mentions people and places, pits,
and has some photos.
As early as 1742 there were missions to the NorthEast, including visits
by John Wesley. However it appears that the main impetus occurred in
1874 when James Hender arrived from Barrow. He is credited with
establishing the first Durham Bible Christian Mission Quarterly Meeting
held in Murton on 29 June 1874. The first Minister was Enoch Rogers.
