Ken:
You seem to be confusing two different things. The burial
ground at Burnmoor is a Church of England parish churchyard, not a
cemetery (cemeteries, under the Cemeteries Act, are an alternative to
parish churchyards, which are therefore ruled out as cemeteries!).
There are two sorts of cemetery records: one is a register of
burials and the other a register of graves. In the case of Church of
England parish churchyards there rarely, even nowadays, any registers of
graves. It will therefore probably be the burial register which you
seek. Any disused register, the final entries in which are more than
100 years old will effectively have to be in the Diocesan repository,
which in this case is Durham County Record Office. Even disused
registers which are younger then that are more often than not deposited
there, so that is where you should enquire in the first instance. Any
registers not yet deposited will be kept in the church.
Remember that Burnmoor church is a late-nineteenth century one.
Before that it was all part of Chester-le-Street parish, where the
Record Office has only microfilm copies of the registers, as the
originals are one of only two sets on Co Durham which have managed to
escape the net and remain legally in the parish safe.
Best wishes,
Geoff Nicholson
