Hello Listers
I have two questions, the first should be simple, the second perhaps
more difficult unless you know Durham very well.
1. Where is West Auckland located? One would expect it to be west of
Auckland, but which one? I am aware of parishes named Bishop Auckland,
Saint Helen's Auckland and Saint Andrew's Auckland.
2. From an old single page note written about 1942 which summarised
family history, a place named Etherleadene (sic.) is mentioned. I have
found no such place anywhere in the United Kingdom. I have been told
however there is a place in Durham named Etherley. Is anybody able to
confirm this and tell me where it is? Perhaps Etherleadene (sic.)
is/was a part of, or associated with Etherley or perhaps it was the name
of an estate.
I should add the note was written by my wife's grandmother as her mother
was close to death. The old lady, perhaps muddled in her recollections,
was speaking of her father and grandparents at Etherleadene.
Any help and suggestions greatly appreciated.
