Michael,
A little over a year ago, I ordered and received .the will and inventory of
my gggggg grandfather, William Nicholson, from Special Collections at Durham
University. He died in 1691 in Berwick-upon-Tweed. The people there were
wonderful. I corresponded with them by email. There was a minimal fee of
just a few pounds sterling. However, they don't take credit cards. For
those of us in the US not close to a big city this is a problem. It would
cost me US $40 to get a bank check in pounds sterling through my local bank
in the equivalent of about US $6 for the fee. Of course, I could have sent
them cash if I could change dollars into pounds locally. But, this is not
possible in the US except in major cities. For, me it would have been a 5
hour drive each way to Boston to get a few pound notes. However, the folks
at Durham University were wonderful. I told them that I would be attending
a conference a month later and, at that time, would pass through an
international airport where I could change currencies. They replied that
they had copied the will and inventory and put them in the mail. They asked
only that I send them the pound notes when I could get them a month later.
Which I did. I received the will and inventory about two weeks before
leaving for the trip and the chance to exchange currencies. I was very
impressed and very grateful.
I did not save the email address but you can find it on the Durham
University web homepage which should not be too difficult to find.
Good Luck!
