That is correct, Heather, but the reason for applying to Gateshead for
a certificate is that Ryton is part of Gateshead Registration District, and
has been since 1837. When I referred to it earlier as having been part of
Gateshead since 1974, that was meant to be a reference to the local authority
- the Council to which peolple pay their Council Tax and the organisation
that empties the bins, etc, which is not necessarily the same thing at all to
a Registration District!
I suppose the connection with Gateshead for Registration purposes
probably stems from the Gateshead Poor Law Union having included not only
Gateshead itself but, on the west side of the town, the districts which
became the Urban Districts of Whickham, Blaydon and Ryton and, on the east,
that which became Felling Urban District.
