The two marriages which you would have found on FreeBMD for John McGurk are
both after the year 1852 from when there were only two marriages per page,
rather than the 4 marriages per page in entries prior to 1852, according to
the information on FreeBMD
The 1869 marriage has the four names of the two couples, two males two
females and neither, as you said, is an Isabella or any variation of the
name. The second marraige in 1872, however, only shows 3 names two Males
and 1 female so there is the possibility that your Isabella might be the
missing person from this entry. "But" you can search the Newcastle
marraige register index on line via the Northumberand & Durham FHS website
at http://www.ndfhs.fsnet.co.uk/RegIndex.html I searched this index for a
marriage in 1872 for John McGurk and the result gave a spouse name of
Margaret Jobson, so it would seem that this marriage is not the one you seek
either.
Did you find John and his wife Isabella on the 1881 census living at Westoe?
If so then Isabella was born at Hartley NBL if this entry is correct and you
might look in that area for a marriage, most couples marry in the bride's
parish. But this couples children were mostly born in South Shields so John
and Isabella may have married there if Isabella's family had moved to that
area previously.
As Geoff Nicholson says you would really need to check the GRO index itself
either at your nearest Record office or LDS library etc, or else via the
online version. It would be best to check the children's birth
registrations first which will show the mother's maiden name then you would
be better armed for finding the marriage.
Another option is to search the Durham CRO Civil Registrarion index at
http://www.durham.gov.uk/gro/search.nsf/search+index I made a search for a
marriage for John McGurk for various year ranges and found a few but none to
an Isabella. I am wondering if Isabella might have been a middle name which
the lady preferred to use. You might find the births of the South Shields b
orn children by using this index.
Hope this is of some help.
