Dear Listmembers,

I have been finding some of my ancestors in the Butsfield and Satley Land
Tax records 1760 - 1830. In the later years there is a name or description
of the properties. Two properties are relevent to me. One was larger and
obviously was the family home of a wheelwright, carpenter etc with a number
sons. The other was smaller by its rental value and tax assessment and
occupied by one of the sons, also a wheelwright etc. I imagine it possible
the son still came to work at the family wheelwright's shop. Initially in
1826 both properties were described as a 'Dwelling House' yet in later
assessments, the larger property was described as a 'Tenement & Land'. As
the 1826 assessment is not clear, I cannot say whether it increased or not.
Some properties were listed as 'Tenement' only. The OED gives so many
options for tenement including dwelling house or very general meanings that
I do not know which to choose.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the distiction between 'dwelling house' and
'tenement' in the Lanchester area in the 1820-30 period.

Comments gratefully accepted.
