I have a copy of the will of an Elizabeth TODD spinster of Houghton Le
Spring dated 1795. In her will Elizabeth mentions the following people,
including their relationship to Elizabeth, some of whom I know a little
about and others I know nothing. I would dearly love to find out more about
the Todd family that Elizabeth Todd came from as they would have been my
ancestors.
Sister Ann TURBITT
Nephew Robert TURBITT,
Nieces Elizabeth, Mary, Jane, TURBITT,
Niece Magdalen SMITH wife Timothy Smith of Bishop Middleham,
(Magdalen Turbett marr. Timothy Smith in 1764 at Trimdon.)
Niece Ann REED wife John Reed.
Sister Hannah NASBITT
Nephew Robert NASBITT
Niece Hannah TURPIN wife of William Turpin.
Children of Niece Ann SMURTHWAITE late wife of John Smurthwaite.
(I believe that the late Anne SMURTHWAITE wife of John was Anne Todd before
marriage I have found a marriage for this couple along with several baptisms
of children for them on my fiche of a transcript of Sedgefield PRs).
Sister Ann TURBITT must have been the wife of John Turbitt and the mother
of those Turbitt nieces and nephew mentioned as well as being the mother of
Magdalen SMITH but I have not foun d a marriage for Ann Todd to John Turbett
or any variation.
I have the baptisms of Mary, Magdalen, Hannah and Anne Turbitt all at
Trimdon between 1736-1739 and also what I believe are the right baptisms for
Robert and Jane Turbitt at Witton Gilbert in 1742 & 1746 respectively but
no baptism found for Elizabeth Turbitt dau. of John Turbitt. All the
baptisms show only the father John Turbet/Turbut.
I am in touch with 4 other people who all share Magdalene Turbett and
Timothy Smith with me as common ancestors and we can take Timothy Smith's
line back to Durham City in around 1675, but the Turbetts are proving much
more difficult to trace. The marriage of Ann Todd to John Turbett about
1735 or so would be a great help.
If anyone can add anything to the above in any way or connects to anyone
mentioned I would like to hear from them.
Regards
Jenny DeAngelis.
