Hi list,
I have received a birth certificate today for a Mary Ann Japs daughter of Sarah Jane Japs (no father) born in Throston Workhouse in 1877. I was not expecting Sarah Jane to be the mother so now I have a big puzzle to solve.
1891 Cesus states
13 Silver Street, West Hartlepool RG12/4064 Folio 130 Pg 76
Robert Medd Head 29
Jane Medd Wife 34 Servant
Edward Medd Son 6
Harriet Jarps Step daughter 14
I know that Jane Medd and Sarah Jane Japs are the same personas I have the marriage record for 1880. But there is no way that she can be the mother of Mary Ann born 13th July 1877 and Harriet born 1877. I and other list members have been unable to find a 1881 census return for the family. I have been unable to locate a birth for Harriet either but I do have her death in 1942 still Harriet Jarps. I also have certificates for Harriet's illegitimate children.
I also have no explaination why she would give birth in the workhouse as her elder sister also had an illegitimate child who's birth place is given as the familys home address. Surely parents didn't forgive one daughter but force the second into the workhouse?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Donna
