Ettrick Place was between Grey Street and New Grey Street,
If you go to http://aesica.dur.ac.uk/pip/singlezoom.asp?img=p2387&ref1=2258
and zoom in on to 'Sunderland High Street', you will see Grey Street is
opposite the 'e' in Sunderland. It was one of many small streets or Courts packed
into the area between High Street East and Coronation Street. There were not
many houses which would have been tenements with a number of families in
each house.
I don't know about the 1841 Census, but in the 1881 Census there were five
houses containing eighteen families, 68 people in total
