First of all, my thanks to the people who provided information about a
Christian Labor Association. I haven't had the chance to respond until now
because we were out of town (at a cabin next to a beautiful lake in
Minnesota :-), but I do appreciate these leads.
And yes, Dr. Swierenga, I would be honored to be quoted in your upcoming
book. You should know, however, that I don't know this personally, but
second-hand through my father, Leonard Postema. He was narrating my
grandfather's life to me for our family history, making a connection between
the non-promotions and my grandfather's poor health. Despite the lack of
promotions, great responsibilities were still given to my grandfather: in
fact, he was responsible for investing the bank's money, but without any of
the protections that came from being in management. In depression-era
banking, that would have caused just a little bit of stress. And while many
things contributed to my grandfather's heart problems, stress was certainly
a factor.
This last bit, of course, wouldn't be relevant to your book, but I did want
you to know the source of my information. I look forward to your book's
release, and like others I thank you for the immense work you have done in
the area of Dutch-American sociology and history.
