Subject: Re: [DUTTON-Z] Walker Co. Cemeteries

So far as cemeteries in Walker County, all those records are of interest to
me. As a member of the Walker County Genealogical Society (so that I can
receive their quarterly newletter and keep up on what they are doing), I know
that they have in the last four or five years published four or five volumes
of listings of cemeteries in the county. The books are called Here They
Rest. I don't know if they have Dutton Hill in any of those volumes.
I purchased two of the Walker Co. Gen. Soc. Cemetery Books, Here They
Rest, Vol I and Vol III. Vol 1 has the following cemeteries (some of which
are very small), Aaron, Beech Grove, Black, Blanton, Boldo (quite large),
Bonner, Bryan, Burton, Burton Bend, Cedrum Grove, Chapel Hill, Crossroads Ch.
of Christ, Davis, Delvecchio, Duncan Memorial, Frost, Gaddy, Guthrie, Herman,
Hillard, Jenkins-Ary, Johnston, Kansas, Keeton (Nauvoo Area) Keeton (Townley
area), Kitchens, Logan, Lollar, Manasco, Mauldin, Morris, Mt. Hope Bapt., Mt
Zion, New Flatwoods or Liberty Grove Prim. Bapt., Oak Grove, Old New Hope,
Palmer, Pendley, Portzer, Powell Bottoms aka Lindsey, Sims, Smith, Trinity,
Tucker, Unnamed at Eldridge, unnamed at Townley, Waldon, and two Wright
Cemeteries.
Vol. III has larger cemeteries and also has an index of all names at the
back which Vol I does not have. That volume includes Davis, Gains, New
Prospect, Oakman-Day, Old Flatwoods and Samaria Cemeteries.
David, if you have the time and the inclinations to gives us some
listings online for our group, I am sure it would be of help to someone. It
might save you a considerable amount of time to check with the Jasper Library
first to see which cemeteries they have not listed yet, or to refer to those
cemetery volumes (all of which they have on file) and take the Dutton or
related names from them to share with the group.
There is an old listing of the cemetery at Dutton Hill. I forget when it
was listed but it has been a number of years ago. I have a list and some
pictures of the marked Dutton graves there that I can look up, and post. But
if there has not been a more recent listing than the one they have on loose
sheets, it would be a great public service for the library and the people of
the county as well as for us if you did an update.
Another Dutton descendant, Maranda Dutton Owens recently also shared with
me that she was considering doing a listing of Dutton Hill. I made the
suggestion to her that she get whatever listing the Jasper Library has and
use it as a check off sheet so that she doesn't have to take the time for
writing down all those that are already listed. Also, David, when I was at
the library in 1990 and 1995, there was a genealogy person available in the
genealogy room at the library where they have all their family records that
was very knowledgeable about how to locate everything, but she was not there
every day. So, if you plan to go to the Jasper library, I think you would
save time to call ahead and see what day that gen. person is working. The
first time I went in 1990 she was there and was extremely helpful. In 1995,
when again, I had only one day, she was not there and since I did not know
the ins and outs of where things were located, I did not get nearly as much
done. The people at the front desk did not seem to know much about the
references in that room at that time. They just told me when the gen. person
would be there.
I, for one, would not mind a complete listing of Dutton Hill Cemetery as
there are many of the names there that, while they are not listed as Duttons,
are, in fact, Dutton descendants that may be in our databases. The Susan A.
Irwin grave (or any other Irwins) is of particular interest to me as I have
just discovered that this is one of my ggrandparents. I did not see her
grave on either of my visits and if I had, the name would not have seemed
significant.
I don't know if Maranda Owens subscribed to the list or not. She may be
planning to do some listing at Dutton Hill as well. David, you may want to
contact her. Her e-mail is . She is a descendant of James
and Mary Irwin Dutton's son George W. Dutton.
So far as the unmarked graves, I have no knowledge of who would be
located in any of them, but would love to know. Perhaps the gen. librarian
might know someone to ask about it. I haven't heard any of my cousins there
knowing either, but you might give Geraldean Mote (widow of John Mote, who
died not too long ago, so phone may be in his name) a call. She lives very
near the cemetery and seems to know a lot about it. She attends church at
the Dutton Hill Church.
I would be happy to list the Dutton and related names from the cemetery
books that I have if anyone thinks that would be helpful, or if there is a
surname that anyone wants checked, I could do that also. Eula
