Hi all:

The recent post about a DYER going to China caused me to dig out
an old article published in "The Highlander" magazine, Vol. 31, No.
4, July-Aug 1993. Perhaps it will be of interest to someone.
Briefly digested it says...
HENRY DYER was born at Bothwell, Scotland in 1848. He
received a doctorate degree in engineering from Glasgow University and
accompanied Commodore Perry to Japan in 1853. He spent 10 years
teaching at the Engineering College in Tokyo. The Mitchell Library
in Glasgow houses the Dyer collection of 6,000 items donated in
1920 by his descendants. The Edinburgh Central Library has a collection
received in 1945 from his family, of Japanese prints and watercolors and
medals presented to him by the Japanese Government.

I found it interesting because the Dyer family seems to have a
goodly share of inventors and engineers. Would be happy to share
xerox copy of article with anyone interested.

I am still looking for identity of parents of CHARLES DYER m. Susan Sherman,
who lived in area of Millidgeville Illinois about 1850!
