Hello everyone.
I am now back from my vacation. I had a wonderful time although I
didn't seem to have as much time as I would have liked to do all the
things that I wanted to do!!
I was able to progress a bit in my research and found several graves
that I was looking for in the cemetery at Marloes Parish Church.
My grandmother was Elizabeth Jane THOMAS and I am certain that her
father was Thomas THOMAS, Master Mariner, and her mother was Maria
THOMAS of the Fold Farm, Marloes.
However, the only reference I have been able to find of an Elizabeth
Jane THOMAS is a birth certificate which says she was born at Wood,
Walwyn's Castle. I am presuming Wood must refer to a farm? I did
not know her birth date but deducting her age given on her Death
Certificate, it would be 1872. This birth certificate is for 5th
July, 1872 and the names of the parents are Thomas Thomas and Maria
Thomas nee Thomas (these are correct for my grandmother). However,
the father's occupation is given as farmer. At the baptism of her
brother, Alfred Vaughan, in 1874, the father's occupation is given as
retired Master Mariner. He is listed on the 1881 Census as Master
Mariner and in 1891 as Retired Mariner. On my grandparents marriage
Certificate (1894), her father is given as Master Mariner. His
gravestone in Marloes church yard also states Master Mariner.
My question after all this is, could he possibly have been retired at
the time of her birth and was working as a farmer? My grandmother,
by the way, is not on the 1881 Census (at least not at home) and is
also not at home in the 1891 Census. However, at the time of her
marriage she was living in Charles Street, Milford Haven. I did have
a quick look at the 1891 Census while in Haverfordwest for Charles
Street in hopes that I would find her there but I had no luck.
I would love to have some suggestions or ideas as to how I can prove
that I have the correct Birth Certificate.
Thanks for any help,
Gwen Fitch,
from hot, humid, and cloudy Bermuda.
