I'm new to the list and hope someone with knowledge of Cardiganshire can
give me guidance or assistance in finding the birth of my g-grandfather
Thomas LLOYD and the marriage of his parents.
I'm unable to find his arrival in Australia, which is unusual, but because
of his occupation he could have worked his passage aboard ship and therefore
wouldn't appear in passenger lists.
What I do know about him:
At his marriage to Mary WILLIAMS (b. Denbighshire) in Sydney January 1868 he
said he was a 33-year old bachelor and shipwright whose birthplace was
Cardigan. His parents he gave as John LLOYD, a cooper, and Margaret DAVIES.
At the registration of his children's births he gave his place of birth as
South Wales or Cardiganshire, except for one birth where he gave it as (what
looks like) New Case. The clerk who took down the information often took a
stab at what he thought the informant was saying (Thomas Lloyd was the
informant).
All his life in Australia he was a firm Presbyterian. Whether or not his
parents were Presbyterian I know not.
If naming patterns are any indication of family he named his children:
John; Florence Mary; Margaret Elizabeth; Thomas John; Henry George and
William Frederick. His wife's parents' names were John and Elizabeth. None
of the other names appear in Mary Williams' family.
I assume he must have served an apprenticeship in Wales as a shipwright and
would therefore have been near the sea or an estuary.
All advice and help much needed.
Yours in hope
Geraldien Walsh in Sydney
