Geraldien

My gg-grandfather, James Millard Phelps, came from Pembrokeshire to
Sydney, in his case in about 1851. He initially worked as a waterman,
acting as a water taxi across the stretch of water where the Sydney
Harbour Bridge is today. He married Margaret Turnbull in 1854 in one of
the presbyterian churches. I understand that the Church of Wales and
Presbyterian churches may have had similar philosophies, but I am happy
to be corrected on this.

Interestingly, Margaret Turnbull's father, Alexander, was also a
shipwright. I believe he worked at one of the shipyards on the North
Shore, in the area which was called St Leonards at the time. Stanton
Library at North Sydney has a pamphlet on its website titled "Boat
Building on the North Shore". Do you know where your g-grandfather
worked?
