Dear Listers

Still attempting to trace the family of my 3x great grandfather, Henry
Phelps, further back. (Baptised Milton, Pembrokeshire, 1802, died Tenby
1870, lived Manorbier, Pembroke and Tenby, footman/manservant/groom).

Does anyone have an interest in a James Athoe or John Canton, who may
assist with links to Henry?

Marriage register entries:

11 Dec 1824 Henry Phelps bachelor OTP and Martha Millard [also
transcribed as Williams] spinster OTP By licence Both signed register.
Witness: James Athoe and John Rees

25 May 1805 Benjamin Thomas widower OTP and Martha Phelps spinster OTP
By banns Both signed register with a X. Witness: James Athoe and John
Canton

The 1881 British census has:
James ATHOE  Lodger  U  Male  67  Jameston, Pembroke,
Wales  Earthenware Dealer [presumably of Staffordshire pottery!]
Elizabeth MILLER  Head  W  Female  60  Newcastle On Tyne,
Northumberland, England  Lodging House Keeper
+ many other lodgers and some relatives.
Dwelling  101 103 & 105 High St Census PlaceBurslem, Stafford, England

There is an IGI individual record which matches this man for age:
JAMES ATHOE Male
Christening: 22 FEB 1814  Bethel Sardis & Tabernacle Ind Or Cong, St.
Florence St. Issels And St. Mary Tenby, Pembroke, WalesDeath:
Parents: Father: LEWIS ATHOE Mother: REBECKA

This James Athoe is obviously too young to have been the witness at the
above weddings but I wonder if he connects to the family of the
witness and the family of our Henry Phelps.

Genuki has "The Account Book of Thomas Morgan of Camarthen" listing a
James Athoe as attending the Grammar School at Laugharne in 1753.

John Canton also appears as a witness at two other Phelps or Millard
weddings,

Thank you for any assistance,

Megan Phelps
