Dear Otis, You are faced with a common problem in genealogical research
-- how to sort out two individuals with the same name born about the same
time. In the answer that follows much of the documentation comes from
Roswell R. Hoes' book, "Registers of the Dutch Church of Kingston, New
York, 1660-1809". KB = Kingston baptismal number; and KM = Kingston
marriage number.

It is good to keep in mind that the nickname "Grietje" comes from the more
formal name "Margriet" or Margaret.

KB# 681 on 4 October 1691 a baby "Grietje" was baptized. The parents
were Gerrit J. Dekker and Magdaleentje Willemsen. The witnesses were
Broer Dekker and Cornelia Jurriaansen.

KB# 879 on 1 December 1695 a baby "Margarit" was baptized. The parents
were Gerrit Decker and Grietje Deckers. The witnesses were Cornelis
Janssen Decker and Elsje ten Broek.

Marriages for both sets of parents were found:

KM# 67 Gerrit Janse Deckers, j.m., born in Kingston, and residing in
Marmur [Marbletown], and Magdalena Willemz Schut, j.d., born in N.
Albanien [New Albany]. First publication of banns on 2 April1684; date of
marriage not given.

KM# 75 Gerard Janz Decker, j.m., from the Esopus, residing at Mombaccus,
and Margriet Janz Decker, j.d. from the Esopus, residing in Marmur
[Marbletown]. First publication of banns on 20 January 1685; date of
marriage not given.

It is useful to know that what used to be called Mombaccus is now called
Rochester in Ulster County, NY.

I looked for the marriage of Thomas Quick and Margaret Decker:

KM# 308 Thomas Kwik, j.m. born in Nieuw-Jork [New York] and Margrieta
Dekkers, j.d. born in Rosester [Rochester]. Banns were registered on 6
December 1713, and the marriage took place in the Kingston DRC on 22
December 1713.

The fact that Thomas Quick's wife was born in Rochester/Mombaccus gives
the edge to her having been the daughter of Gerret Jans Decker and
Margaret Jans Decker. Can we find something even more convincing to make
the case?

In the book "Minisink Valley Reformed Dutch Church Records, 1716-1830" on
page 97 in the section on "Records of Baptisms of the Reformed Church at
Machackemeck (Deerpark), I found a baby "Margrita" baptized on 29 January
1718. The parents were Thomas Quick and Grietje Decker, and the witnesses
were Gerrit Decker and Geertje Decker.

"Gerrit Decker" could be the paternal grandfather, but who is "Geertje
Decker". The nicknames "Geertje" and "Grietje" look alike to us, but they
are VERY different to Dutch speakers. "Geertje" is short for "Gertrude"
amd "Grietje" short for Margaret.

Back to the Kingston records to see if I could find a Geertje Decker who
could fit into the jigsaw puzzle.

KB# 990 on 11 September 1697 a baby "Geertje" was baptized. Her parents
were Hendrick Decker and Antje Quick; the witnesses were Carsten Luirssen
and Geertje Quick.

It would indeed make sense for Geertje to become a sponsor for a child of
a Decker/Quick marriage!

The question now became, "How is Hendrick Dekker (Geertje's father)
related to Gerret Janszen Decker?" As it happens, they turn out to be
brothers.

KM# 13 on 23 March 1664 in the Kingston DRC Jan Gerretsen [Decker] of
Heerden [in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands], j.m., married
Grietjen Hendricks Westerdamp, who was born in New Amsterdam. They were
both living in Kingston.

KB# 51 on 14 February 1665 "Gerret", the son of Jan Gerretsen and
Grietjen Hendricks, was baptized. He grew up to marry Margriet Jans
Decker in 1685 (see above).

KB# 88 on 9 October 1667 "Hendrick", the son of Jan Gerretsen and
Grietjen Hendricks, was baptized. He grew up to marry Antje Quick in
1696.

By using place of birth and baptismal sponsors as supporting evidence, I
think we can say with confidence that the parents of the Margaret Decker
who married Thomas Quick were Gerret Jans Decker and Margaret Jans Decker.
