A number of you have asked that I post the family names of original owners of
the historic houses mentioned in the book "Town of Esopus Story". With the
exception of the one Terpening house these were not safe houses for the
underground railroad, but just those of historic interest. Some of these names
have several houses listed. The homes are located only in the Township of
Esopus so the list does not include many others in Ulster Co.

HOUGHTALING, VELIE, NIESE,VAN VLIET,VAN AKEN,
ELTINGE,DEANE,ELMENDORF,ELLSWORTH, HUTCHINGS, VAN KEUREN, LOUW, COOL, HERRING,
STORY, SCHRYVER, DELAMATER, DUMOND, WELLS, SCHOONMAKER, VAN WAGENEN, DUBOIS,
HORTON, ACKERT, SMITH, FREER, BURGHER, HASBROUCK, DAVIS and TERPENING.

I will gladly do any look-ups on these for anyone who is interested! :-)
