Since you can't control the natural lighting, the best thing is to
bring a light weight mirror--polished metal is best (so it can't break)
but glass will do--with a frame and a way of propping it up at
different angles. If the sun is out or the sky is overcast but bright,
you can almost be assured of reflecting sunlight on the stone at an
angle to highlight the incising of the inscription. If it's really
overcast a reflector doesn't help much. A flash you can position away
from your camera will, of course, work even in the dark, but I've
always found that more cumbersome than a polished reflector. Whatever
you do, avoid marking the stone in any way.
