Hi Ted and Kelvin,
Ted writes:

I suspect this came from a tax list which is also described in this book
(vol 5 pp 220-225):
Fernow, Berthold, ed. _The Records of New Amsterdam from 1653-1674_. 7 vols.
New York: The Knickerbocker Press, 1897. Reprint, Baltimore: Genealogical
Publishing Co., Inc., 1976. Subtitle: Minutes of the Court of Burgomasters
and Schepens.
(I believe that this drew on O'Callaghan's 1848 manuscript translation from
the original Dutch.)
Recall that the British took over New Netherland on 8 Sep 1664. About Apr
1665, Governour Nicolls wanted to quarter 100 soldiers in peoples' homes.
Nicholls was going to pay 3 guilders per week per soldier. But they
couldn't find anyone who wanted to do this until they raised it to 5
guilders. On 19 Apr 1665 Burgomasters and Schepens passed an assessment to
raise money to pay the additional 2 guilders. They would pay this amount of
tax weekly for 6 weeks. The list begins on p 221:
List of the Burghers and Inhabitants of This City That Are Assessed:
_The Marketfield_
The Hon. Petrus Stuyvesant fl 4
Annetje Kocks 2
Mr. Marten Cregier 2
François Boon 2
and so forth, people as on Ted's list above
_The Heere Straat_
etc.
And so on listed by street. The heading at the top of the page is
"Court Minutes of New Amsterdam"; also, note there are minor spelling
differences from what Ted found. So, I suspect that what Ted found didn't
come from Fernow's book, but may have come from the same original document
via a different path.
I wonder if occurances like this helped inspire the 3rd amendment to the US
Constitution.

Howard
