[Apologies to Eliz. who will see this answer twice...I meant to send this out
to the Dutch Colonies group but forgot to include them first time around]
<I have a question about Elizabeth Jansen Berry who was b. 1676 in NY and m.
<1699 to Hendrick Mandeville, as a second wife. I had thought that she was d/o
<of Samuel Berry and Catalyna Ryerson who were m. 1690, but this could not be
<from the dates. If Samuel Berry's father was Capt. John Berry, would Eliz. be
<daughter of John Berry instead? Any suggestion will be appreciated. Thank
<you. Eliz. A. Cromer
Howdy Eliz.

Elizabeth is an ancestor of mine. There was an article that appeared awhile
back in The American Genealogist (don't have the exact reference handy) which
discussed her ancestry. She is thought it be the daughter of a JAN (JEAN)
HARRIS and ELISABETH ClAESE. Little else is known of either individual.
I think the name BERRY is derived (and don't quote me on this) from a misreading
of an entry in some baptismal record somewhere where the HARRIS name was
rendered as BERRY (or HERRY).
~
She had a brother JAN HARRIS who married JANNETJE NESSEPAT and had a brood of
children all baptised at the Reformed Dutch Church of New York between 1701
and 1717. ELIZABETH CLAESE acted as sponsor for one of these children.
~
If anyone else has better information that this (or different information),
I'd love to see it.
~
So Eliz., are you descended from ELIZABETH HARRIS and HENDRICK MANDEVILLE?
I'd like to share info you (and any other interested parties) on this family.
~
Sincerely,
~
