Ted,
Yes the Hanoverian Kings, George I, II and II are long gone. However,
the
Encyclopedia Britannica World Atlas, 1963, shows the northwesternmost
state of Germany as Hanover. When it was renamed as Lower Saxony
(Niedersachen), I am not sure. Interestingly, there is a second town of
Emden, about 25 mile SE of the city of Hanover (found on MapQuest.com) .
I do not have confirmation as to which Emden was the hometown of
PieterTjercks, but would suspect the larger town, on the coast, just
east across a small bay from the Netherlands.
Bob
P.S. In checking my 1963 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, the
article on Emden says that it is in the Land (state) of Lower Saxony. I
guess the editors of the atlas did not talk to the editors of the
encyclopedia. <g>
