Subject: Captain Van Cleve -- Plea for Help!!
Date: Sat, 13 Jun 1998 10:23:35 -0400
About 1756, Marya Van Cleef married Ouke van Arsdale in Somerset County,
New Jersey. I have tried for years to establish Marya's parentage. Her
father was Louwerens van Cleef, and her mother was Jannetje ___. Problem
is, there were a couple Louwerens van Cleefs running around at the same
time, and they both married Jannetjes. Even the NYG&BR articles disagree
over which Jannetje this was, various surnames and proofs being offered
every few years.
I have just come across a document which should help sove the riddle: A
Revolutionary War pension application of Ouke and Marya Van Arsdale's son
Cornelius O. Vanarsdall, in Mercer County, Kentucky, states that he served
under his uncle, CAPTAIN VAN CLEVE, in Somerset County. In the same unit
were Cornelius A. and Lawrence Van Arsdale (Vanarsdall -- pick your
favorite spelling!!)
I am making my summer trek to the Allen County, Indian, library in three
weeks. Obviously, I cannot obtain military records for Captain Van Cleve
by then from the National Archives. Please, please, please... does
anyone know a web-site where the New Jersey soldiers might be listed, or
does anyone have information that might tell Captain Van Cleve's given
name?
Sincerely,
Bryce Stevens
